Covered Audiology Services

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

Under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Choice Program (VCP) and Patient-Centered Community Care (PCCC), covered audiology services may include the initial testing, impressions to create hearing aids, fittings, and follow-up care. Hearing aids are ordered directly by VA through its national hearing aid contract. While VA supplies Veterans with the actual hearing aids, please do not refer your VCP or PCCC patients who have been approved to receive audiology services at your practice back to VA for hearing aid fittings or follow-up care.

Audiology services tips:

  • Treatment for authorized audiology services, which includes hearing aid fittings and follow-up care (unless specifically noted as excluded), should be performed by the approved licensed audiologist at your practice. Refer to the provider notification packet received from Health Net Federal Services, LLC (HNFS) for authorization details.

  • Under VCP and PCCC, audiology assistants are not eligible to treat or screen Veterans. Provider offices must decline authorizations for audiology services if they do not have licensed audiologists available to render the required services. Veterans must be held harmless from financial liability, should a claim be denied for this reason.

  • Please submit testing results related to potential hearing aid needs directly to VA within two (2) business days. VA health care facility fax numbers are available on our VA Prescription Fulfillment Information page.

  • When hearing aids are issued, medical documentation for follow-up appointments, such as fittings and adjustments, must be returned within the time frame indicated on the provider notification packet.

As a reminder, all initial care under VCP and PCCC requires prior authorization from HNFS. Unless otherwise indicated, authorizations cover services related to the evaluation and treatment for the episode of care. Please review the provider notification packet in its entirety, as it contains detailed information about services authorized.
