Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who are Warriors?
The Defense Health Agency (DHA) defines Warriors as “soldiers who have served in a combat zone or received hazardous duty pay and believe they have a disease or disability connected to their service.” Health Net Federal Services, LLC (HNFS) extends this definition for the Warrior Care Support (WCS) Program. Warriors are active duty service members (ADSMs), who have a severe injury (combat or non-combat related, for example, injured in combat, injured while on training drills, injured in automobile accident), or have a combat-related mental health diagnosis. An ADSM in any of the uniformed services, including a National Guard and Reserve member with active duty status, who is severely injured/ill and meets the WCS program diagnosis criteria, is evaluated for entry into the HNFS WCS Program.

2. Why has HNFS implemented this program?
HNFS recognized the need to design a program to meet the unique needs of these service members to help ease the transition from military to civilian health care. The program provides specialized, patient-centered health care planning and coordination of civilian health care services for military service members during their transition.

3. Who is on the HNFS WCS team?
The WCS team includes utilization management, case management, social services and mental health services. In addition, HNFS medical directors work closely with the health care coordinator to provide support and counsel.

4. How does a service member get into the program?
There are several ways to join the program:

  • An ADSM may be identified through the authorization and referral process.
  • A military hospital or clinic may call and refer an ADSM to the program.
  • The beneficiary or a family member can call and self-refer to the program.
  • The service member will automatically be enrolled in the WCS Program if the program criteria is met and upon evaluation of the referral and collaboration with the military hospital or Warrior Transition Unit (WTU) case manager.

See the Warrior Care Support Program contact information to talk with a health care coordinator about joining the program.

5. What happens if the WCS program diagnosis criteria is not met?
If the referral does not meet the WCS Program criteria, the WCS team will refer the service member to the appropriate medical management program.
