Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome Treatment

Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) syndrome is a limited benefit. The following may be included in the treatment of OSA syndrome:

  • sleep studies
  • continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines
  • molding and casting for OSA splints
  • OSA splints, fitting and adjustments
  • X-rays
  • bite aligner, "AM" aligner or mandibular orthopedic repositioning device (MORD)
  • hypoglossal nerve stimulation, in accordance with U.S. Food and Drug Administration labeled indications

OSA splints require medical necessity review and either proven history of CPAP use or documentation with a formal OSA diagnosis.

Note: A TRICARE-authorized dentist may order OSA splints.

Pillar palatal implant system and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the tongue base for the treatment of OSA are considered unproven and are not covered benefits.
